Universal power supply 78xx
Various pieces of electronics can be found on an average model railway. And many of those pieces of electronics need a decent DC voltage to work. However, most model railway transformers supply alternating current for lighting and accessories. With the well-known 78xx voltage stabilizers and a handful of components you can create a nice stabilized DC voltage from that alternating current. For example for our light barrier.
The voltage on the output depends on the selected voltage regulator. A 7805 supplies 5 Volts, a 7809 9 Volts, a 7812 12 Volts, etc. A few additional components are needed to make the voltage regulator work properly. The AC at the input is first rectified with a rectifier and then smoothed with a pair of capacitors. A small LED is connected to the output for control purposes; when it lights up, there is voltage on the output.
